Report: from 1st October Student-Staff Committee meeting .

Updates from previous meetings

1. Study space at Oteha Rohe
2. The Cafeteria.
3. ASA Parent Survey.
4. The Gym.
5. Smoking trays.
6. Recycling of rubbish.

1. Study space at Oteha Rohe.

Space across the campus is very tight, especially at Oteha Rohe. However I suggested that study space might be able to found at Oteha Rohe without waiting for a new building to be constructed  e.g.
  • Cafeteria: a small area screened off with a couple of computer terminals and a printer.
  • Gym: could be converted into a study area when the new gym is opened next year.
  • Naomi Patterson (ASA) suggested that part of the student lounge could be utilized as study space.
Prof. Paul Spoonley said that he would follow up the issue of study space at Oteha Rohe with university management.

2. The Cafeteria.

A number of you sent in suggestions last time as to how the service & quality of food could be improved. I forwarded them onto Phil Mann, Albany site manager. Phil Mann is currently conducting a survey amongst students & staff regarding the catering requirements for the campus e.g. type of menu & service...

The situation as it now stands..

  I
nterested parties have been invited to submit tender documents for the 'provision of catering services' at the end of the month. The current contractor has now decided to submit a tender for next year. Apparently they've experienced an upturn in volume since prices were knocked down and the menu broadened

..however you still can't beat the coffee from the Expresso Bar !

The meeting agreed that while the improvements at the cafeteria were welcome, a degree of competition would be helpful in ensuring service, quality & pricing are kept up to scratch.

  However, the
ASA have expressed an interest in running a budget food outlet on the campus and hopefully something will materialize in the near future - if not next year.

3. ASA Parent survey: which was looking into the needs of parents studying at Albany, has now been completed with the results hopefully being released soon.

4. Gym: the new gym and student social area (which will include a bar) will not be ready until April next year.

To think I was looking forward to enjoying a gin & tonic before class next year!

5. Smoking areas outside the atrium block:
Apparently facilities have removed the cigarette trays so smokers either have to BYO their own trays or walk over to the nearest rubbish bin (not!). Hopefully they'll be back shortly.

6. Recycling of rubbish:
A recycling scheme has been trialed at the Palmerston North campus (after recycling was
raised during our March meeting). More to come...
